Tuesday, First Block, 10am-11:15am

Hablamos Espanol - Begining Spanish

Instructor: Leona Abrahao          Age Range: 8-14          Classroom: Cypress

Description: We will be diving into the Spanish language using music and conversation. The curriculum will have an order of topics and vocab, but the learning process will involve more active practice. Still, this class will involve some writing and reading and will have easy homework assignments. This class will be 2x/week.

Important Notes: This class has two sessions with the second of Thursday Second Block.

Prerequisite: No prior knowledge of the Spanish language necessary! This is a beginner to intermediate class. I encourage all students to verbally practice what we learn and eventually speak Spanish in class.

Homework: Easy homework such as practicing a song, a phrase or drawing a picture and labeling it.

Parents: Parents are welcome! I encourage parents who speak some Spanish or want to learn or practice to come and participate.

Foodie Juniors

Instructor: Lucina Armstrong Michaud          Age Range: 6-7          Classroom: Magnolia

Description: In this class, we will learn about our how to take care of our bodies and our minds! Some weeks, we’ll learn about nutrition and healthy food choices. Other weeks we will learn about other ways we can take care of ourselves. Every other week, we will cook healthy and delicious foods together!

Parents: Children who need one-on-one attention throughout the class will need a parent or aid with them.

Inquiring Minds Want to Know

Instructor: Luncina Armstrong Michaud          Age Range: 8-10          Classroom: Cypress

Description: What do you want to learn more about? What are you curious about? Students will complete two research projects over the term. One as partners and one as individuals. We will cover all kinds of research skills and write two 5 paragraph research papers. They will also present their research, once in a presentation and once in a creative way through media. Class will include choosing a topic of interest, identifying key word, internet research, library research, taking notes from gathered resources, making an outline, writing a five paragraph paper, making and conducting surveys and interviews, and presenting information in writing, in public speaking, and media.

Important Notes: None

Prerequisite: Students should be able to read and write.

Homework: Yes, working on their research projects independently and with a partner.

Parents: Parents are always welcome.

Spanish for Littles

Instructor: Leona Abrahao         Age Range: 6-7        Classroom: Oak

Description: This is a beginner Spanish class for littles. There will be songs and an introduction to Spanish vocabulary.

Important Notes: None

Prerequisite: Willing (and able) to sit in a group, follow directions and cooperate with class objectives.

Homework: I may send home an easy craft, drawing or other assignment to encourage students to practice throughout the week

Parents: Parents are welcome to attend (also if they want to practice or learn some Spanish).

Yearbook

Instructor: Meredith Branch         Age Range: 11-14          Classroom: Magnolia

Description: This class will be in charge of producing the Cascadia yearbook! Students will interview classmates, write up short biographies, edit photos, create page layouts, and more. Students will produce the yearbook using Google Docs and a web-based yearbook program. All students in the class must have access to and be able to bring to class a laptop or tablet computer.

Important Notes: This class has two sessions, with the second session on Wednesday Third Block. Students should be open to performing a variety of tasks.

Prerequisite: Students must bring a laptop or tablet to class each week.

Homework: Students may need to do work at home as deadlines dictate.

Parents: Parents are welcome.

Bill of Rights

Description: Students will learn about the Bill of Rights – the 1st 10 amendments to the Constitution. There will be discussions, lectures, videos and activities related to our constitutional rights.

Important Notes: None

Prerequisite: The ability to read, and write are necessary. It would also be very helpful to have taken the class on the Constitution, being as the Bill of Rights are an addition to that document.

Homework: There will be little, to no homework. I plan to get most, if not all of the work done during class.

Parents: Parents are always welcome to observe in my classroom.

United States Geography

Instructor: Chris Fuller         Age Range: 6-7        Classroom: Oak

Description: In this class, we will be learning map reading skills, creating our own maps, and learning U.S. geography with a fun, interactive curriculum.

Math Games & Book Club

Description: Students will play math games together for the first half of the class. FOr the second half, the instructor will read the science fiction novel A Wrinkle in Time, by Madeleine L'Engle and lead class discussions.

Description: Students will develop their own characters and then play together through a campaign with the instructor acting as Dungeon Master.

Big Kid Basics

Instructor: Rosemary Campbell          Age Range: 6-7        Classroom: Oak

Description: This will be a fun class with an academic focus. We will explore phonics, simple math and early writing skills. Last semester we practiced writing our full names, using proper capitalization, and improving handwriting.  We encourage everyone to do their best work in an environment that is inclusive of all abilities.

LEGO Engineering

Instructor: Glen Fredette          Age Range: 8-10          Classroom: Cypress

Description: In this class students will be given a challenge to make something specific, like a car with only the blue Legos from a bin and they will be given a set time to build said project. Students will be given time at the end of class to draw their figure and/or write a short paragraph about their created object.

Important Notes: This is a youth-led class with adult supervision.

Our Whole Lives

Instructor: Ericka Rhodes          Age Range: 11-14       Classroom: Oak

Description: This will be a continuation from the winter term of the Our Whole Lives Curriculum. This is a sexuality education class. This term we will focus on relationships, contemporary issues (such as social media), and responsible sexual behavior. Our Whole Lives helps participants make informed and responsible decisions about their sexual health and behavior. It equips participants with accurate, age-appropriate information in six subject areas: human development, relationships, personal skills, sexual behavior, sexual health, and society and culture. Grounded in a holistic view of sexuality, Our Whole Lives not only provides facts about anatomy and human development, but also helps participants clarify their values, build interpersonal skills, and understand the spiritual, emotional, and social aspects of sexuality.

Prerequisite: Students need to have a basic understanding of sexuality, anatomy and physiology as related to sex systems, general knowledge of what happens during puberty, and an understanding of the spectrums of gender identity, sexual orientation, biological sex, and gender expression.

Homework: Homework will be discussion starters.

Parents: I will encourage students to share information gained during the class, but given the intimate discussion topics I will not inform parents unless for a safety reason. I will offer a parent introductory meeting prior to the start of the semester if there is interest in doing so.

Foundations in Math

Instructor: Everette Fuller       Age Range: 6-7          Classroom: Magnolia

Description: In this class, our primary goal is to continue gaining confidence and proficiency with arithmetic. Sometimes students will work independently in their own journal on curriculum customized to their specific needs. Other times students will work collectively, sharing their strengths with one another. Occasional art and music projects will keep it exciting.

Important Notes: None

Prerequisite: Students are expected to know how to write letters and numerals.

Homework: Very little homework is anticipated.

Parents: Parents are welcome to assist.

Material/Lab Fee: No upfront fees, however students will need an unlined 5×8 journal, a supply of #2 pencils, coloring pencils, and a protractor.

Playground Games

Description: In this class, we will play a variety of common playground games, including hide and seek, sardines, jump rope, and obstacle courses.  We will start each class with a few strength and conditioning activities, such as jumping jacks and relay races.

Important Notes: On sunny days this class may walk to a local neighborhood park.

Description: Tricks in Physics. In this class we will learn about the physical sciences and do tricks with what we learn. There may be some explosions, implosions, gravity defying feats, destruction of property and who knows what else but it’s all in the name of science so it’s OK.

Prerequisite: No, but the teacher is not responsible for mishaps caused by students attempting this at home.

Making Music Together
